Empire Tracker

Giving coaches a clearer way to track participant progress and measure impact.

Empire Fighting Chance is a youth organisation that supports disadvantaged young people through non-contact boxing and personal mentorship. As their programmes expanded, they needed a more efficient way to track participant progress and measure impact over time.
The challengeCoaches were relying on fragmented or manual processes to record participant progress, making it difficult to capture data consistently during busy sessions.

Staff also lacked a clear, centralised view of each young person's journey, limiting their ability to track progress, identify patterns and measure impact across programmes. The challenge was to design a system that worked in a fast-paced gym environment while providing meaningful insight for staff.
UX/UI workI led the UX design for the project, working closely with Empire Fighting Chance to understand how coaches and staff operated day to day and where digital support could improve their workflow.

I also designed the UI and managed project delivery, coordinating between Blu Inc (Empire's digital partner) and IOMI, who handled development.

We focused on
  • How coaches record data in real-time during sessions
  • How to reduce friction in fast-paced, high-pressure environments
  • How staff access and interpret participant progress over time
  • How to balance speed of input with quality of insight
What we found
Coaches needed to log information quickly without breaking the flow of a session. Any friction in the recording process meant data was missed or recorded inconsistently.

Staff reviewing progress needed a clear, structured view of each participant over time, not just snapshots from individual sessions.

The two needs were related but distinct: the interface for coaches in the gym and the interface for staff reviewing progress needed to be designed separately, each optimised for its own context.
What was designed
A progressive web app approach was defined to support quick, reliable data entry in the gym, alongside an admin system for longer-term tracking and analysis.

  • Designed a minimal, fast-loading interface for in-session data entry
  • Created clear participant profiles to support progress tracking over time
  • Developed an admin view for staff to review, filter and interpret programme data
  • Ensured the system worked reliably in low-connectivity gym environments
Outcome

The Empire Tracker app streamlined how coaches capture data and significantly improved the consistency of progress tracking across programmes.

Coaches can now log information quickly during sessions, while staff have a clear, centralised view of each participant's journey over time. This has improved visibility of impact across the organisation and given Empire Fighting Chance a more reliable way to demonstrate the difference their programmes make.
